Instrumentality of the State Machine – Tarquin and Lucretia, painted, signed, and stamped by Laibach

This large painting, entitled “Tarquin and Lucretia”, created with acrylic on a felt canvas, is essentially a pictorial enlargement of one of the first two Laibach posters from 1980, launched in the context of the group's “coming out” event at the Trbovlje Delavski Dom (Labour Hall) on 27 September 1980. The poster, occasionally called also The Deadly Dance, was subversively put up around the city overnight. The motif of the poster refers to Titian's painting of Tarquin and Lucretia, as well as to a scene from John Carpenter's movie Halloween. The original Laibach painting with the same motif, which served as the matrix for the poster, was also created by Laibach back in 1979/1980.
