RED DISTRICTS II - Glass Factory Hrastnik, signed and stamped by Laibach

[Shared Red Districts Text]

The image "Glass Factory Hrastnik", is one of the eight iconic motifs from the Red Districts series in this set (all prints on aluminium plates). The Hrastnik glassworks factory started producing glassware (beer glass, medical glass, cut glass and crystal glass) in 1860. In 1903, the factory was taken over by Franz Wieltschnigg, who modernised and expanded the business considerably and extended sales abroad, including across overseas.

After the First World War, in the newly established State of SHS (Slovenes, Croats and Serbs), the factory was first plagued by staffing problems (many of the glassmakers were Germans and Czechs) and a shortage of raw materials, and then, after the construction of several other factories in Serbia and Croatia, by overproduction.

After World War II, in in the newly created country of Yugoslavia in 1945, the Hrastnik glassworks was nationalised. Until 1960, most products were produced on the basis of designs dating back to the 1939 catalogue. One of the innovations at that time was a bottle for a new drink - Cockta, the popular Yugoslav version of Coca-Cola. In the early 1960s, production was modernised and in 1973 the first fully automated line for the production of bottles and catering glasses was introduced. In the 1980s, the factory satisfied 80% of Yugoslavia's demand for glasses in the catering and household sectors, and 90% of the demand for small packaging in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food sectors. During the period 1991-1996, after Slovenian independence, the company switched to high-end glass products and renovated its production. The Hrastnik glassworks is still standing today and is of great importance for the economy of Hrastnik and the region.

Laibach performed in the city of Hrastnik only once, at the opening of the Kamerat Workers' Film Festival on 17 June 2024.
